Background of the study
Maternal depression is a critical public health concern that affects mothers’ wellbeing and child development. In Abeokuta South, traditional healing practices have long been used as complementary approaches to manage maternal depression. These practices, which include herbal remedies, spiritual counseling, and ritualistic interventions, are deeply rooted in the community’s cultural heritage (Adeoye, 2023). Traditional healers often serve as trusted advisors, providing emotional support and culturally acceptable treatments that are perceived to alleviate symptoms of depression (Balogun, 2024). Despite the availability of modern psychiatric services, many mothers opt for traditional healing due to cultural acceptance, accessibility, and affordability (Femi, 2025). This study investigates the influence of traditional healing on maternal depression management, aiming to evaluate its effectiveness and explore potential avenues for integrating traditional and modern treatment modalities.

Statement of the problem
Maternal depression remains under-addressed in Abeokuta South due to the predominance of traditional healing practices over modern psychiatric interventions. The reliance on indigenous methods, while culturally endorsed, raises concerns regarding standardized care and measurable treatment outcomes (Adeoye, 2023; Femi, 2025). The lack of empirical evidence supporting traditional methods creates challenges for healthcare providers, leading to gaps in effective treatment. This study seeks to critically examine the role of traditional healing in managing maternal depression and identify opportunities for integrating holistic approaches with conventional mental health services.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of traditional healing in maternal depression management.
  2. To assess maternal perceptions of traditional versus modern treatment methods.
  3. To propose integrative strategies for improved maternal mental health.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is traditional healing in managing maternal depression?
  2. What are the perceptions of mothers regarding traditional healing practices?
  3. How can traditional and modern treatments be effectively integrated?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional healing significantly alleviates symptoms of maternal depression.
  2. Mothers favor traditional methods due to cultural familiarity.
  3. Integrated treatment approaches yield better mental health outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant in addressing maternal depression through a culturally informed lens, highlighting the potential of traditional healing methods to complement modern psychiatric care. Its findings will inform mental health policy and promote integrated treatment strategies, ultimately improving maternal well-being (Balogun, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the influence of traditional healing on maternal depression management in Abeokuta South Local Government, focusing exclusively on indigenous treatment practices.

Definitions of terms:

  • Maternal Depression: A mood disorder affecting mothers during and after pregnancy.
  • Traditional Healing: Indigenous practices and remedies used to promote health.
  • Integrative Treatment: Combining traditional and modern healthcare approaches.
